Dress Code Changes at Eureka High School

Eureka High School parents were alerted Wednesday evening that the school's dress code has been revisited and clarified. "This (new) version, based on long-standing traditions and input from teachers and students, strives to foster a climate of respect for everyone and keep our focus on learning," stated Principal Deborah Asher.

Although the mode of dress for students is primarily the responsibility of the students and parents, students will dress in a manner that shows respect to all who work at or attend Eureka High, began the announcement.

New dress code guidelines at Eureka are:

• Apparel should not be risqué, outlandish, or distracting.
• Appropriate clothing will NOT show any of the following:

• Boxers/Briefs/Underwear
• Bras
• Back
• Belly/Stomach/Midriff
• Backside/Butt/Bottom
• Breast/Chest
• Bare/Nearly Bare Shoulders

• No headgear—unless it is for religious reasons—is to be worn or carried in the building. Headgear worn for medical reasons must be approved by the school nurse.

• Clothing will not display:

• suggestive, obscene, or inappropriate writing or pictures.
• alcohol, tobacco, or drugs.

The dress code applies to all students regardless of gender.

"Although the dress code will be included in the student handbook each student will receive in August, I felt it was important to provide you with advanced notice to make sure that you were fully aware of expectations when doing back-to-school shopping," stated Asher.

Teachers will write a referral and require the student to remove or cover the violation.

1. First Offense—Detention (headgear confiscated, if applicable)
2. Second Offense—Extended Detention
3. Third Offense—Insubordination Referral with Subsequent Consequences

Editor's Note: Unless tights or leggings are going to be covered under the "distracting" clause of the new dress code, they do not appear to be specified. Is clarification needed for that?
