Creek Bank Erosion Curbed by Eureka Students
Students in an environmental Eureka High School class will be recognized for their efforts with an Above and Beyond Award during the March 7 Rockwood School District Board of Education Awards Ceremony.
Last semester, students at Eureka High School in Dianne Johnson’s advanced placement (AP) Environmental Science class participated in a major creek restoration project at the school. Working with the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Army Corps of Engineers, students developed a plan to prevent further erosion of a creek embankment that was causing a portion of the parking lot bus lane to deteriorate.
After obtaining a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers, students worked with Rockwood's facilities' department employees to place nearly 30 tons of rock and 215 trees and shrubs in the area.
Johnson said this project has fixed the worst of the water issues caused by the creek.

“I’m proud of how hard the students worked on this project. It’s rewarding to know that we’ve provided a solution to the bus lane for years to come," said Johnson in a district news release about the project.
