Would You Support an Amtrak Station in Eureka?

The idea came up years ago, but was dropped because of the cost.

Reports say that officials in Eureka and the Missouri state legislature have expressed interest in building an Amtrak rail station in the city — which would be the only stop on the Missouri River Runner route between Washington and Kirkwood.

The route connects St. Louis and Kansas City.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the city's board of aldermen plans to find out of Amtrak would let the city create a stop in the city's Old Town neighborhood.

The newspaper cited Mayor Kevin Coffey, who said the city had considered the idea when a state lawmaker approached Eureka with the idea seven or eight years ago, but it was dropped because of the cost.

Coffey said in the Post's report that the idea was worth reconsidering given the 30 percent increase in Eureka's population since then.
