West Frisco Park Progresses

Constructors of the new, mini-park and parking area fondly called the West Frisco Project in Eureka are pushing toward an August premier date. Join the dedication celebration Aug. 12.

One of the topics that prompted Eureka Mayor Kevin Coffey to smile bigger during the city town hall meeting on July 6 was delivering an update about the West Frisco Project. This new city development adds a small park and 43 parking spaces to downtown, or Old Towne, .

Coffey encouraged town hall attendees to consider hosting a variety of special events in the future gazebo and surrounding space, including picnics, church functions, fundraisers and special celebrations, such as anniversaries. He said planners hoped it would become a favorite spot for railroad officianotos.

He said city leaders hope to soon host an Art Show, Blues Festival and a Farmers' Market in the new area—perhaps even barbecue contests.

The mini-park will be fully powered with multiple electrical services to accommodate a variety of uses, Coffey said. Much of the construction and electrical work was done by city employees. "We deliberately put in 20 independent circuits with oversized wiring to accommodate vendors' needs, including ice cream freezers, as requested by ."

Coffey said the gazebo is 16 feet-by-22 feet. It will have lighting and fans. "Color and design-wise, it basically will match Berry Park, with off-white pillars and railings. And we're happy that the area is fully handicap accessible."

City officials will host a grand opening celebration at the park on Aug. 12 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The band, Pick'n Lick'n will perform that evening.

The park is located at the corner of West Frisco Street and South Virginia Avenue, directly behind .

"The gazebo and park will be ready for just about anything. We really feel it will enhance the downtown area," said Coffey.
