Special School District of St. Louis County to Vote on Board Candidate, Incumbent

Two board seats are up during this election season with one newcomer and one incumbent filing to take the spots.

The deadline just passed to file as a candidate for board positions with the Special School District of St. Louis County (SSD), for the 2013 municipal election season.

SSD handles the election process in a different manner than other municipal elections. Nancy Ide, SSD's chief communications officer, said the district has one candidate for each of the two seats up for re-election.

"With the passage of Proposition S in 1998, SSD Board of Education members are elected by the District’s Governing Council," Ide said. "The Governing Council will interview both candidates, and hold an election at its meeting."

The Council is comprised of one Board of Education member from each of the 22 school districts in St. Louis County.

The election will occur at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, in rooms 60-61 at SSD Central Office, 12110 Clayton Road in Town & Country.

To be eligible to run, a candidate has to be at least 21 years old prior to taking office, a U.S. citizen, a resident of the city for the full year preceding the election and a resident of the district from which he or she is elected for at least six months prior to the election.

Margaret Lestina has filed for the Subdistrict 3 seat, which covers the Parkway School District. Ide said Ken Eigenberg did not run for re-election.

Incumbent John Koeper has filed for the Subdistrict 4 seat, which encompasses the Pattonville, Ferguson-Florissant and Riverview Gardens school districts.
