Soldier Memorial Inquiry Posed

A Wildwood resident asked about plans for a memorial in Wildwood dedicated to armed forces soldiers.

During the public comment portion of the Wildwood city council meeting held Monday evening, a resident asked if there were any public designations within the city for fallen and current U.S. soldiers who hailed from the local area.

Marc Perez said such memorials appear in almost any small town, and that he believes it would be appropriate for Wildwood to have such a public designation.

Perez asked if any military representatives from the local area had died during the 15 years that Wildwood has been incorporated. "I hope something's in place, planning for that eventuality," he said.

Wildwood Mayor Tim Woerther said he indeed was aware of some local soldiers who had passed while serving. He said while there was no designated public place at this time to honor those who served or are serving in the military, there had been some thought about whether such a designation could be done at the future city hall building. He said he believed it would be an appropriate project for the city's steering hall committee members to explore.

The timing for discussing this project is right in that Memorial Day is coming May 30. Formerly known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day commemorates U.S. women and men who died while in the military service. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time on that day. A National Memorial Day Concert also is held on the west lawn of the United States Capitol.
