Notification to Wildwood Residents Enhanced

Wildwood city staff and representatives recently took steps to improve the reach and readability of public notifications.

How to best enhance public notification materials for Wildwood residents has been a topic of discussion for the past few years.  City officials finalized those improvements at Monday's city council meeting.

Joe Vujnich, director of planning and parks for Wildwood, proposed new plans for the city's mailings, postings and notification process, which were based on recommendations from the city's Planning/Economic Development/Parks Committee and adopted by council members Monday.

Previously, mailings were distributed within a 1,000-feet radius of a proposed development. Vujnich said now that mailing distribution will broaden to a 3,000-feet radius, or nearly a one-half mile notification perimeter.

"In the rural districts of Wildwood, the former area covered just wasn't adequate," said Vujnich.

He said they also will step up efforts in the more densely populated urban areas as well.

"PEP committee members felt the old mailer format may not be as effective as it could be, so we have a newly formatted form with a new introduction paragraph added about encouraging public input," said Vujnich.

PEP committee chair and council member Michele Bauer (ward 8) said public participation in the city's decision-making process has been a major goal of elected officials and staff, and partially was why residents sought to incorporate Wildwood "after many years of poor governance by St. Louis County" of the area.

At a Feb. 15 PEP committee meeting, members recommended that city notification signage be enlarged. Signs now of up to 12 square feet in diameter will be posted. Signs also are planned to be erected at a waist-high level, rather than close to the ground.

"It's important to note that Wildwood is far exceeding what other municipalities are doing to reach their residents," said Bauer.  "And we believe this better notification will be much appreciated by the city's citizens."
