Meet Eureka Alderman: Wes Sir

Yessiree, Wes Sir, takes community involvement seriously. This is the second in a series of features that profile Eureka's board of aldermen. Check back each day this week for the next feature.

Some people try to fight stress by powering through it. Others try to hide. Wes Sir has a simpler solution. “I try not to let stress get to me,” explained one of Eureka’s Ward 1 Aldermen.

“If you just stop and think about the issue or thing that is bothering you, you will realize that it is not the end of the world,” he advised. “You will wake up the next morning, and you can finish what you need to do.”

Sir isn’t finished yet. After 12 years serving as president of Hilltop Villages subdivision, he wanted to do more for the entire community, so he ran for office. Along with his career as alderman, he’s currently first vice president of the West St. Louis County/Eureka Lions, preparing for September’s . He’s a past president of the Eureka Jaycees and an active member of the Methodist Men at , where he’s been raising funds for the Eureka Food Pantry, including last month’s .

His favorite activity, however, is spending time with his family. “As a young person, my family took long vacations. I tried to give my children some of the same opportunities, so they could see other parts of the U.S. Going to South Dakota and the Black Hills has always been one of my favorites, both when I was young and when I took my own children,” he said.

Now, while Sir is spending time with his 20-month-old granddaughter, and watching “the amazing things she says and does,” he’s re-introducing his adult children to Eureka.

“My son, who came back home for a visit during our in July, thought that was the greatest thing Eureka has ever done,” said Sir. “He said he never would have believed Eureka could be this much fun. When I told him we did this once a month during the summer, he said, 'Wow, Eureka has really changed.’”
