Groundbreaking Held for New Wildwood City Hall

Wildwood city officials, contractors and guests broke ground under clear skies Monday evening to commemorate the start of building a new city hall.

Wildwood's new city hall has been about two years in the making, and city staffers, representatives and contractors were eager to shovel the first official loads of dirt at the construction site on Monday evening. About 70 officials and guests attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

"We're very glad to start this project after tireless efforts from many different groups of people who worked to make it happen. A downturn in the economy and construction industry actually enabled us to proceed at reduced costs," said Wildwood Mayor Tim Woerther.

He thanked a variety of committee members, commissioners, city authorities, community leaders, contractors and staffers for their patience in working through a lengthy, but necessary, process.

Architects who designed the project, known as The Wildwood Collaborative, planned for it to be completed within 14 to 18 months. This architectural group, which contained Wildwood residents, was composed of Powers Bowersox Associates, Dennis Tacchi & Associates, John C. Guenther, Architect, and helmuth + bicknese architects.

Contractors handling the project, K & S Associates, Inc., said they hoped to complete it within 12 to 13 months. K & S was the lowest bid from among 10 contractors who bid the project.

For practical planning purposes, occupancy of the new building was last targeted for March 2013.

Actual construction activity is expected to commence within the next two weeks. The last projected cost for the project was $5,986,800.
