Eureka Residents: How to Get Emergency Updates by Phone, Text, Email

The notifications will come to your residential or cellphone, or by email if you prefer.

Residents of Eureka have an easy and free way to get updates from the city about emergencies in the community such as missing children, bomb threats, natural disasters and severe weather emergencies.

The system is provided by CodeRED, and residents can sign up on the city's website to receive phone calls or emails about the situation.

Here's what the city of Eureka says about the service on its website:

"CodeRED can employ mapping capable of geographic targeting of calls, coupled with a telephone calling system capable of delivering a pre-recorded message at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour.

"CodeRED can reach Eureka residents by residential phone, business phone or cell phone. The system will make three (3) attempts to contact citizens and will leave messages in voicemail and on answering machines.  The system can also send e-mails if desired.

"The only way to ensure that your information is entered into the CodeRED system is to sign up for the notifications.

"You will be asked to provide your phone number and home address so that notifications made only to selected neighborhoods will be accurate. Again, your contact information will only be used for emergency notification purposes."

Glad to see the outreach to the community. For people who live outside (or work outside) the City of Eureka, go to www.usnear.org to sign up anywhere there's a system like this. Thousands of US counties have some kind of emergency notification service, so this address (www.usnear.org) is a great way to find one page that can get to them all.
