Weaving I-44 Driver Wrecks, Arrested on Suspicion of Drugs

PHOTOS CAPTURE IT LIVE: A single-car accident Wednesday afternoon on eastbound Interstate 44 at Lewis Road led to the driver being searched and ultimately arrested.

Shortly after St. Louis County Police received a call about a careless and imprudent driver on Interstate 44, a man heading eastbound ran his car off the right side of the highway just past the Lewis Road exit.

The male, driving what appeared to be a Ford LTD, was taken into custody by St. Louis County Police officers after he ran his car into an embankment off of I-44. The accident occurred just after 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Eureka Fire Protection District firefighters and a Missouri State Highway Patrol officer also responded to the accident.

St. Louis County Police officer Eric Algren told Patch the car was registered to a St. Louis County resident. The driver was the only occupant in the car, and he didn't hit any other vehicles during the accident.

When law enforcers responded, Algren said "things just didn't look right," and alleged drug-related paraphernalia was found during a search of the man and his car. As seen in the photos captured by Patch, a syringe-like item was pulled from the man's pocket by police.

Algren said there were outstanding warrants on the driver. He said the man would be taken into county custody, and transferred to the jurisdiction from which the warrants stemmed.
