Driver Wrecks in Drainage Ditch

A one-car, rollover accident happened late Thursday afternoon in Eureka off of Fifth Street.

A male driver of a Pontiac Vibe sports wagon overturned his vehicle in Eureka at approximately 4:45 p.m. while heading west on Fifth Street. The accident occurred in front of .

The driver was checked by Eureka Ambulance emergency crews at the scene of the accident, but only appeared to be shaken up rather than injured, according to authorities.

There were no passengers in the vehicle.

"We received a call that someone was ejected during the accident, but that wasn't the case," said Bill Fowler, patrolman.

Firefighters from both and Pacific Fire Department were dispatched to the accident scene.

Police said the driver is a resident who lives off John McKeever Road, just outside of Eureka. They said he dropped something while driving, and the accident occurred when he bent down to retrieve the item. The wheels of the vehicle dropped into one end of the stormwater management drainage ditch. The driver then reportedly was propelled by a different portion of the ditch, which also caused the vehicle to overturn.
