Monarch Fire Softball Team Wins Tourney
Employees of the Monarch Fire Protection District swept the St. Louis annual softball tournament for Emergency Medical Services Week, and now head to New York for the World Police & Fire Games in August.
When they aren't focused on fire-related matters, some of the paramedics and firefighters of the Monarch Fire Protection Department focus on softball. Their passion for and dedication to softball paid off, in that the team won the championship at an annual ball tournament held May 18 in observation of the national Emergency Management Services Week for the St. Louis metropolitan area.
The tournament was sponsored by SSM DePaul Health Center. Twenty teams, consisting of employees within area fire and ambulance districts, participated. It was held at the Bridgeton Municipal Athletic Complex.
Next, the Monarch team of 12 heads to New York City August 26 through Sept. 5 for the World Police & Fire Games. These games started in California in 1985 in observation of the 300-plus firefighters and emergency crews who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. This year will be the 10th anniversary of the tragedy.
