Man Indicted on DWI Manslaughter Charge in I-44 Crash

A truck driver was killed trying to avoid Matthew Snyders' car in the middle of I-44 after he hit a guardrail one mile west of Six Flags near Eureka.

A Webster Groves man was indicted by a St. Louis County grand jury on an involuntary manslaughter charge Jan. 30.

St. Louis County prosecutors charge that Matthew Snyders, 44, of the 1400 block of South Elm Avenue in Webster Groves, was driving while intoxicated when he hit a guardrail on westbound I-44 about a mile west of Six Flags about 4:55 a.m. Sept. 27.

His car spun out and his 2007 Saturn Ion stopped on I-44 in dense fog, and Snyders got out of the car, according to Missouri Highway Patrol report.

An oncoming truck swerved to avoid Snyder’s car and overturned several times at about 5 a.m., according to the report. The truck driver, Joshua Sanders, 34, of Rolla was killed.

According to court documents, Snyder’s blood-alcohol content level was 0.167 percent after the crash, more than twice the legal limit. Later, his blood-alcohol content level measured at 0.184 percent.

Snyders posted 10 percent of a $50,000 bond and was released Dec. 27. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 20.
