I-44 Driver Dodges Animal, Wrecks Himself

A Rolla man went down an embankment off Interstate 44 late Tuesday night and then to the hospital.

A well-intended 29-year-old driver from Rolla swerved to avoid an animal that he said was on Interstate 44 Tuesday night, which caused the vehicle to veer off the right side of the roadway.

Paul Runnion was driving a 2001 Honda Civic. The accident occurred at 10:50 p.m. on the westbound lanes near milemarker 246.4, according to a Missouri State Highway report.

Runnion's car overturned, and was totaled. He was wearing a safety belt, according to authorities, and was taken to Mercy in Washington, MO, by a Union Emergency Medical Services crew. His injuries were deemed "minor."
