Hunting, Deer Incidents Recorded With Police

Many people took a turn this week at trying to discover and analysis Wildwood's history with firearm- or hunting-related accidents. Local police Capt. Kenneth Williams provides the facts.

Several times during a at Wildwood City Hall, various citizens asked why the issue was surfacing when there did not appear to be a history of problems or accidents in the municipality.

Capt. Kenneth Williams told Eureka-Wildwood Patch that from 2001 through 2011, Wildwood Precinct police had documented 15 hunting incidents:

  • Six involving archery hunters
  • Eight involving firearm hunters
  • One involving a muzzleloader

Williams indicated two incidents were safety-related violations of the city’s hunting ordinance, while nine incidents were related to hunting without permission.

He said his department logged two incidents about trespassing while hunting, and one case that involved illegal hunting.

Two reported incidents—one by archery device and one by firearm—during this time period resulted in injuries involving hunting weapons, he said.

"In both incidents, it was the hunter who was injured. The archery incident was a result of a fall sustained by the hunter, which caused injury from contact with an arrow. The firearm incident involved the discharge of the hunter’s rifle. The discharged round struck the hunter in his foot," Williams said.

"Neither injury was life-threatening."

In addition, he said the precinct investigated an incident of a residence being struck by a shotgun “slug” projectile in the area of Hawks Rest subdivision located off Missouri Route 100.

Regarding the hitting of deer by vehicular drivers, Williams said from 2008 through 2011, Wildwood averaged 220 vehicle "deer strikes" a year.
