County Police Officer Helps Rescue Trapped Wildwood Resident

Wildwood precinct officer Matthew Grewe is being recognized by the Monarch Fire Protection District for helping prevent a 60-year-old man from being crushed.

St. Louis County police officer Matthew Grewe is receiving recognition for his role in helping a 60-year-old Wildwood resident after the man became trapped underneath a heavy steel fence.

The incident occurred on May 17, according to the Monarch Fire Protection District, which is honoring Grewe and seven other individuals for going above and beyond in saving the life of another citizen.

On that day, Grewe was dispatched to the property in Wildwood and arrived to find the 60-year-old resident pinned by the structure, commonly used to corral horses.

EMS and rescue crews were still several minutes from the scene, so Grewe immediately began hauling the fence sections away one at a time until they arrived.

Monarch Public Information Officer Ray Antonacci credited Grewe's physical conditioning and quick action for preventing "without a doubt" the man from suffering serious injuries or possibly death.

Along with the other individuals, Grewe was given a Citizen Life Saver Award during a ceremony at the fire district's Chesterfield headquarters Thursday night.

Grewe is an officer with the St. Louis County Police Department's Wildwood precinct.
