Assault at Bar Leaves Man With Broken Nose, Fractured Face, Lost Teeth

Police said a Wildwood man and another person repeatedly punched and kicked another man at Larry's Tavern.

A Wildwood man punched and kicked another man, breaking his nose and a facial bone, and knocking out teeth at a local bar.

Craig M. Gustafson, 38, of the 300 block of Copper Mountain Court in Wildwood, was charged Monday with first-degree assault.

St. Louis County Police said Gustafson punched the man in the face, knocking him down Dec. 29 at Larry’s Tavern. Gustafson and another man then repeatedly punched and kicked the man, who had teeth knocked out and suffered a broken nose and a bilateral Le Fort fracture, a broken facial bone that required surgery according to court documents.

The man reports continued pain and the possibility of another surgery, police said.

Police have not yet identified the second man in the assault, according to a St. Louis County Police warrant application.

Bail was set at $50,000 for Gustafson. He was released from St. Louis County jail after being served with an arrest warrant Tuesday.

Larry's Tavern, Where's that his ex-brother in-law's basement? What a J-A!
Nicole Smith March 07, 2013 at 10:52 PM
Im sure his wife and children are proud
KAB March 07, 2013 at 11:16 PM
It's ridiculous how this article makes Mr.Gustafson sound like an animal. I have seen a bar fight once or twice and it is by no means one sided. Everyone makes mistakes and this man is a great father and very involved member of the community. It's a shame that there are articles like this written. This is no ones business but his.

How is this low class bar still in business? I've been here, and never seen so many drugs and underage drinking taking place!
David March 08, 2013 at 12:40 AM
KAB, If this guy is such a class act he would never hurt another man to this degree..... more or less frequent a bar with that reputation. You must be a friend, relative or out of your mind. This guy is far from a pillar of the community. Give me a break and grow up. This guy is a pos

Larry's tavern does not allow this kind of behavior, and your next door neighbor probly frequents Larry's! Don't blame the bar for others actions.
Brittany Roan March 08, 2013 at 02:11 AM
This is what Larry's is known for...its why everyone I know and myself won't step foot in there.
Sue March 08, 2013 at 02:30 AM
Brittany- why is it that Wildwood police officers would come into the bar if it was "known" for fighting? I think you need to lighten up and live a little because Larry's is the place to be on any given night. Don't listen and believe in the rumors you hear and see for yourself how much fun you can have if you would allow yourself to.

I find it hard to believe that people who have never been to larrys have comments so bizarre and negative. Larrys has been a family owned business for over 40 years. My family has been en joying larrys for 3 generations. enjoyed many outings with family and friends!

Sue, this article is based on public court records, as supplied by police. We always are open to additional information and invite you to share more about this circumstance. What other details are there about this incident?
Nicole Smith March 08, 2013 at 03:11 AM
Bottom line is forget where it happened this man could of killed this guy and I don't see a scratch on his face... Yes people make mistakes but wow what a costly mistake this one was financially and his reputation.. I assume he wasn't thinking about that as he was knocking his teeth out
Truth March 08, 2013 at 03:12 AM
Innocent until proven guilty. You should be asking who is making the claim - I guarantee that he in NOT a pillar of the community. It is never the guy who starts the fight that gets blamed, it is the one who retaliates in self-defense. I thought we all learned that in Kindgergten. Craig will be exonerated.

I have been to larrys many times in the last six years and i have never had any problems at all in there , and have never seen any DRUGS in there!!! I am a younger man and still look young and i still get asked to see my id when i go in there unless it one of the bartenders that i know. It is very sad that this happened there but the bar did not beat anyone up, put the blame where it belongs. Not larrys fault at all!! And they blame it all on this guy craig when in all reality it takes two people to fight...
cj March 08, 2013 at 02:42 PM
To blame larrys or anyone else for what this man did is an insult...I am a relative to larry and have spent a lot of time in there my whole life...the things being said obviously are coming people who clearly don't know what they are talking about.
BLJ March 08, 2013 at 03:32 PM
I was born and raised in St. Louis County and I have been going to Larry's for 45 yrs,not always to drink but to just have a good time and meet and make friends.I have met so many good people there. It astounds me how people can write some of the most illiterate comments i've ever read in a public column. This an upstanding business do you really think that anyone associated with the tavern was egging this on ? GIVE ME A BREAK ! I know you're not customers or friends just busybodies that think your s- - - don't stink ! Why would your Pillar of Wildwoods Society have been in there ? He sure isn't my idea of a PILLAR OF SOCIETY ! Maybe you guys should elect your pillar Mayor.
srsly March 08, 2013 at 04:17 PM
just because the other guy got his butt whipped doesn't mean he wasn't the aggressor or at fault.
TL March 08, 2013 at 06:31 PM
It's pretty sad people will say such horrible things about Larry's Tavern, but yet have never been there! You should go in to see if you should believe everything you hear. I love Larry's and their food is the BEST!!
Nicole Smith March 08, 2013 at 06:52 PM
This story was not written about Larry's Tavern it was reporting an assault there, all you Larry Lovers calm down
KAB March 09, 2013 at 04:16 PM
David, you must have been there and know exactly what happened to say that he is a pos. How do you know who started what? How do you know exactly what happened? I'm not family at all nor do I even live in wildwood anymore but I'm not stupid or naive enough to believe that this whole thing was one sided.
Kristi Brown March 10, 2013 at 08:42 PM
I am a personal friend of the man who was beaten severely. He is a very friendly person and I've never known anyone to not like him as he's just an all around nice guy, period. And, while I believe that bar fights are usually carried out by both parties, I happen to believe that a beating this severe, this painful and the sheer force used to impart this much damage - and subsequent surgerieS - was carried out by someone who has massive anger issues or who was racially motivated to carry out such an act. A bar fight is one thing but beating a person this harshly and kicking them in the face over and over again? As they say, it's a bit of overkill. I'm sure the victim didn't deserve that as I don't think anything could merit that much destruction of a person's face; but that's just my personal opinion.
Nunya March 17, 2013 at 05:45 PM
Great father?!?!? Great example. Takes a real tough guy to double team another and then kick him when he's down. As for Larry's, it was here long before the pretentious people who bash it were. Lighten up or move!
Nunya March 17, 2013 at 05:51 PM
Larry's has been a staple of the area long before it became the "trendy" hangout for the elite Wildwoodians. If you don't like it, go to Table Three or Harpos, sip your wine and martinis, and hang out where you'd fit in better...
Sylvester Mena Mena March 20, 2013 at 08:38 AM
Here's what happened. The victim, let's call him Ami, made a wager on shuffleboard and lost. He refused to pay, and the Jew got his ass kicked. End of story.
Kristi Brown May 14, 2013 at 01:31 PM
Wow. Okay, and not paying deserves getting his face kicked in? And, by your last comment, I will stand by my racially motivated crime comment. I don't think this has anything to do with Larry's and don't know why anyone would assume this. As someone stated earlier, this is a case of a bar fight, but one gone terribly wrong. It doesn't matter where it happened, it just matters that it did and that the person(s) responsible pay for their crime. Period.
