Preamble of the American Legion Constitution
A few choice words have guided the actions of the American Legion over its long and successful life. They are great to live by.
The American Legion was founded in 1919 right after the end of World War I and spread all across the United States. I became a member of O'Brien Post 177 in Eureka after service in the U.S. Marines, in 1946, 65 years ago.
This is recited at the start of each meeting:
"For God and Country, we associate ourselves together for the following purposes;
Find out what's happening in Eureka-Wildwoodwith free, real-time updates from Patch.
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;
To maintain law and order;
Find out what's happening in Eureka-Wildwoodwith free, real-time updates from Patch.
To foster and perpetuate a 100 percent Americanism;
To preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in the great Wars;
To inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation;
To combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;
To make right the master of might;
To promote peace and good will on earth;
To safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of Justice, Freedom and Democracy;
To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness."
Isn't that a wonderful statement to guide the thoughts and actions of the group? It has served me through the good times and bad and I thought I would share it with you also.
