Forby Road Update

Forby Road in Eureka is continuing to progress, including the new wall.

I haven't seen much truck traffic with loads coming off the hill because for the last three weeks or so, most of the trucks are hauling loads of fill crushed rock or finer rock used for making the base or holdings for the nice-looking concrete block wall along the hill side of Forby Road in Eureka.

So this update will let you know things are moving along very well, and it will take longer to complete than my earlier estimate, as this part of the project takes a lot of effort by the crew, who by the way, seemed to be happy that the really hot weather recently was past as a less humid day was being experienced today.

New telephone lines have been installed, but not connected to the homes, as the workers are drilling new underground lines under West North Street, most of the difficult work is completed.

The electric lines are complete and new hookups to the homes also are in use.

New cable trunks are attached to the new poles and when the go ahead is given, it will not take long to do that and get the old poles out of the way.

So the big push will be getting the new wall installed so as to make the finish grading and paving possible. Perhaps we locals should enjoy the relatively low traffic count on North Street as long as Forby is closed, because if Alt Road is improved our traffic will be increased as people will have a better access to Highway 109 and then I-44.

Anyhow, the workers I spoke with are happy to have jobs to do. Perhaps we should get on the wagon to encourage the government to improve the Route 66 State Park Bridge at Times Beach. I would hate to see a million dollars spent to tear down something I watched being built, when in 1933, it only cost about $250,000 to build.

This was part of my platform as a recovery aid in 2010 and will remain. I see on Facebook recently when questions like "Did you remember the old shaky Bald Hill Road Bridge?" I had to answer that I led the effort in the state legislature to have it replaced with Highway W, which made a bunch of Republicans who had land to develop, a bank full of money, even though it had to be replaced just 30 years later, when it had some breakage.

I led that effort, not to make me money, but to make this a better area, which it certainly has. We are fortunate that North Street and Forby are much the same.

So while I fretted a bit when my cable service line was torn down two different times, it will be a great improvement to the city when completed.
