Caterpillars

Have you seen many yet?

Some readers will remember my blog about Army Worms, and the way we tried to control them in the old days.

There is . A caterpillar is the forerunner of a butterfly or other type of moth.  It is known as a larva, and I guess the weather has been good for them this year, with no deep freezes last winter and a bit of moisture from time to time during a rather warm March.

I am fortunate that I am not infested with many insects this year. Perhaps all the dirt movement during the North Street and Forby Road improvement and the continued grading to get ready to develop Weber Hill subdivision upset the normal use of the land by the ever-present growth of new insects. So far this year, I have not even seen a mosquito, and for that, I am thankful.

Even the locusts are not expected to be heavy this year as last year, the 17-year critters had my front yard all mined as they came out to mate and expand the species.

My brother, Bud, lives right on Flat Creek in downtown and during my visit with him today, he told a new tale of the season. This happened as he looked at his front yard and saw a snapping turtle making a nest and watched as she began laying her eggs for this year. After a time he walked out and got acquainted with her, even petting her back. She didn't mind, and soon she covered the eggs and went back to the creek.

So life will go on as it has for centuries. One Spring on the farm I found that nothing is impossible, as I watched two box turtles mating. Even on North Street, we have a pile of top soil in back of my home and a pair of deer used it as a mating place. So life goes on. Even our turkeys are confused in St. Louis County, as I saw the picture of two in one week, one flew through a window and damaged the kitchen stove, while the other flew into the side of an Affton house and damaged it severely.

Good luck to you as summer will be here soon.
