A Fascinating Week

Maybe he (President Obama) knows things we don't: Observing events of this week, here and around the world.

Locally, our roses are blooming, Berry Park was dedicated, and much work was completed on relocation of utilities along North Street and Forby Road in Eureka.

The Cardinals have learned to win again, and we heard the news that Osama bin Laden is no more.  We were told that he is child number 27 of the 57 fathered by his father, and had several wives, living with at least three at his death.

Several in contact with me expressed the thought that bin Laden's killing was murder.  In trying to answer, I thought back to the many friends who made landings in the Pacific during WWII.  On Tarawa, where 4,900 Japanese were embedded, after 76 hours, only 19 remained alive.

In other actions, some prisoners were taken and killed because there was nothing to do with them.

Someone once said, "War is Hell."

Yesterday, Pres. Obama paid tribute to those involved in the action in Pakistan.  Earlier I had seen him while watching the Correspondents Dinner at the Hilton, as he said,  "What a week this has been," as he described his visit to the tornado damage in the South, a visit as the Space Shuttle was aborted, the Wedding in England and other events. At the time, he alone among the 2,600 diners knew he had ordered the bin Laden attack.  Maybe he knows things we don't.

One of the reasons I devoted my life to community service after WWII was the use of A-Bombs on Japan, making the coming invasion moot, saving my life as most of us preparing for that mission felt we would be killed or suffer wounds.

So perhaps my reasoning was correct,  War Is Hell.
