To many Americans, the idea of a flu shot is simple enough: Pay for a quick injection, don’t worry about getting sick. Without further investigation, this concept is easy to grasp. The reality is much more dangerous. Part of the danger stems from the chemicals used to create the flu vaccine. The other part is due to the sheer amount of injections to which we are subjected.

As it turns out, flu shots are more harmful than they are protective.

First, let’s address an all-too-common example of flawed logic. You got the flu shot last year, and you didn’t get the flu for a whole year. By not getting sick you do not prove the flu shot effective. If you consistently live a healthy lifestyle, you probably wouldn’t have gotten the flu—vaccine or no vaccine.

Avoiding illness for a year has much less to do with injecting a dead or nearly dead virus directly into your bloodstream than it does with consuming the right nutrients and staying active. Unfortunately, in many cases, the tiny exposure to a virus can trigger allergic reactions that otherwise wouldn’t have appeared.

All in all, flu shots most common side effects are fever, fatigue, muscle aches and headaches—the symptoms of the flu itself.

Full of Toxins

We’re accustomed to reading the nutrition facts of our favorite foods, but we often overlook the ingredients of the vaccinations touted by medical doctors. Several of these chemicals are actually well-known poisons.

Thimerosal is a common preservative featured in many vaccinations. Better known as mercury, thimerosal is banned for use in shot in California, Delaware, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, New York and Washington. Its use is also forbidden Scandinavia and in children’s shot in the United Kingdom. However, it is still commonly used in flu vaccines.

Monosodium glutamate, or MSG, is also often featured in vaccinations. MSG was infamously vilified for its use in Chinese take-out.  It destroys the brain’s appetite control center and can consequently lead to overeating and weight gain. Yet, it is still allowed for use in vaccinations.

Another common ingredient is porcine gelatin. This ingredient comes from pigs, notoriously toxic animals that literally live in their own filth. It has been known to cause allergic reactions.

Children’s Illness

Kids are susceptible to illness. As infants and toddlers, their immune systems are still developing. As they enter school, they are surrounded by dozens of other sick children. At adolescence, they eat and eat and eat, increasing their probability of consuming toxins and dangerous processed foods. However, encouraging proper nutrition and keeping children active can keep their immune systems strong enough to fight off the flu.

Smart choices are cheaper and safer than dozens of vaccines.

A 2002 study has shown that children who’ve received the flu shot are 14 times more likely to develop asthma, and more than nine times more likely to develop eczema.

The Choice

On the whole, the flu shot is not nearly as effective as it is widely assumed to be. It has been linked to a number of various side effects and often cannot be proven to actually protect you from the flu virus. Blindly paying for a flu shot can incur consequences you’ve never considered.  Choose the healthier, less publicized option. Smart choices in the supermarket and a consistent fitness routine can fight illness as much as a sterile syringe.
