Disappearing Richard: St. Louis Contestant in National Health Challenge

Richard Carr is trying to lose a pound a day in a national health and weight-loss competition. He exercises at the Wildwood Y and has changed his eating habits. Support him in his blog.

Richard Carr may call himself “Disappearing Richard” because of his significant weight-loss success, but it’s no mystery where to find him these days. When not at his job at the Music Conservatory, this talented musician often spends his time working out at the or eating healthy at the Genghis Grill.

That’s because Richard was selected as a Healthqwest contestant, which means he is competing against 80 others individuals across the country in a weight-loss contest sponsored by Genghis Grill. As such, he gets to eat at Genghis and exercise at his facility of choice for two months to get a solid jumpstart on his weight loss program.

And so far he’s lost—drumroll please—17.5 pounds!!

A native of New Orleans, Richard has an appreciation of good food. So curbing his intake has been a challenge, as has been dedicating time for workouts. He used to be an athlete and a basketball player. Now he’s doing exercise that’s easy on the joints.

“I haven’t had any CHOCOLATE or Dr. Pepper or Arizona Iced Tea or CHOCOLATE (Oh, I said that already) or any other processed sugar since January 2,” Richard says.

YMCA Health and Wellness Director Gary Hirssig says Richard is a perfect example of how the Y helps people get back on the health and fitness tract.

“Richard’s trying very hard to exercise on a regular basis and improve his eating habits,” Gary says. “We help people start out with whatever they can. At first that may be water exercise or five minutes of cardio. Then they do a little more each day. That’s the key. And be consistent on a regimen, not sporadic.”

Richard’s going for a pound a day. To move him toward the winner’s circle and most importantly, show him your support, give Richard a daily thumbs up on his official Healthqwest Challenge blog.
