Patch Picks: Local Nonprofits

This week, we salute some of the local nonprofit organizations.

  1. Tri-County Birthright in Eureka is an independent nonprofit dedicated to assisting women and couples with nonjudgmental support regarding unplanned pregnancies.  Using its own resources, Birthright presents many services, such as free pregnancy testing, and maternity and baby clothes. They also provide information and referrals to help clients meet legal, medical, financial, and housing needs. The staff and volunteers give personal attention to each client's unique situation. All Birthright services are free, absolutely confidential, and available to any woman regardless of age, race, creed, economic or marital status.  The group appreciates donations of new baby items, especially diapers.  It is located at 300 W. Fourth St.

  2. in Wildwood is a non-profit organization that was started by a registered nurse to provide persons who are developmentally disabled with a unique horseback experience, which strengthens and supports the natural motion of the spine and pelvis. This type of therapeutic riding delivers specific health benefits, such as improved respiration, circulation, balance, and body metabolism along with greater muscle strength and agility. Their new arena is located at 3369 Highway 109 near Rue de LaSalle Street. They have many ways for volunteers to participate on a weekly or monthly basis.

  3. The mission of the Rockwood Drug-Free Coalition in Eureka, is to provide leadership, education and resources to prevent and address substance abuse and unhealthy choices among Rockwood youth.  Comprised of representatives from all sectors of the Rockwood community, the goals of the organization are to provide information, community involvement, collaboration, evaluation, facilitation of support programs for high-risk individuals, and peer-oriented prevention programs.

  4. in Eureka enables teens from disadvantaged circumstances to lead successful lives and build strong networks. The organization's vision is to foster communities where every teen is expected and supported to thrive in life, work and learning so that they may become economically self-sufficient, leaders in their communities and, ultimately, break the cycle of poverty.  They have developed programs over the last 110 years, and are nationally recognized for innovative, comprehensive results.  It is located at 600 Kiwanis Dr.

  5. Just celebrating a 125th anniversary this year is the La Salle Retreat Center in Wildwood, which is a secluded spot atop an impressive hill located at 2101 Rue De LaSalle, off Highway 109.  The organization's caretakers are rooted in the Lasallian (Christian Brother) Tradition.  The retreat is supportive of spiritual and human development. They promote an inter-faith presence and religious tolerance, with a preference for youth and groups of lesser means.
