New Focus for Farmer's Market Leaves Some Vendors Behind

The city of Wildwood is placing a greater emphasis on making sure the vendors are selling locally produced products.

As the Wildwood Farmer's Market shifts its approach this year to a bigger emphasis on local produce and products, some of its former vendors are upset at the change.

Wildwood Director of Planning and Parks Joe Vujnich said agreement signed with the new managers of the market made it a "producer-only" farmer's market, meaning it must be locally grown, grazed or manufactured.

"We preclude re-sellers or individuals who have purchased products made elsewhere," he said. "We had a couple of vendors from last year who complained about it since they don't meet the requirement."

Vujnich said the businesses registering the complaint including a jewelry sales person and Wildwood Chiropractic.

"We have told them we are trying to do what a farmer's market is intended to do and appreciate their participation over the last five years," he said. "We wish them the best."

The transition is being driven by an ownership change initiated by the city council in an effort to help the market "reach its desired potential."

George and Renee Sacket, or SOL Events and Catering, are in charge this year. They also operate the Ellisville Farmer's Market.

Vujnich delivered a report about the launch of the Farmer's Market's 2013 season at a city council meeting May 28. He reported that the first week saw 13 vendors and the second week added one more for a total of 14.

"The crowds have been steady and the vendors have been pleased," he said. "The new managers are very enthusiastic and looking for ways to promote the market."
