Scalfano's father and grandfather opened Scales Furniture on Lemay Ferry Road in the early 1960s. That building was damaged beyond repair during the 1993 River Des Peres flood.

Scalfano reportedly has worked for major furniture retailers, such as Carol House, Lane, Broyhill, Thomasville Stores and Rhodes Furniture. His wife, Paula, is an interior designer.
