Business Spotlight: Helping Students Find Success; 'Reward Are Far Reaching'

Information about local business, Helping Students Find Success, submitted as part of our irregular Small Business Spotlight feature.

Eureka-Wildwood Patch invited small business owners to submit information about their business for an irregular "small business spotlight" feature. Here's what was submitted from Carol Otis and her business "Helping Students Find Success." The former Rockwood teacher provides the service from her Ballwin home. She can be reached at 636-391-8054, or her cellphone at 636-391-8054, or by email at osotis4@aol.com.

When was the business founded? 2005.

How did the business come to be? After teaching for 23 years in Rockwood School District, I learned that some students' successes can be best reached by working individually with a qualified teacher. Often these are students who are hesitant to ask questions and speak in class. Students going through the college acceptance process find extra help with college essays and ACT/SAT preparation beneficial.

Why did you choose the area you did? The rewards for the students and myself are far reaching. Some of my students who began working with me during high school continue to seek help on specific college assignments or in difficult classes.

What does your business offer? I offer individual assistance to students who are struggling in school, need help in a specific class, and are going through the college selection process. I have both a degree in journalism and a masters in education; my teaching of writing strategies has been helpful to many students who need direction when completing writing assignments. Enhancing organizational skills also help students find success.

What's something interesting about your business customers might not know? I love to write and have enjoyed many exciting traveling adventures as a freelance travel writer.

What's your most popular product or service? Helping individuals find the success that allows them to become more productive students.
