October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whether one loves to shop, attend events, walk or run, there are tons of different ways to support the cause. Check out the following list of opportunities to go pink in West St. Louis County and beyond:
Support Pink Sports at Eureka High School's Homecoming football game Friday night versus Lindbergh. Eureka's football team will be wearing pink socks and other signs of support to breast cancer awareness. In addition, various Eureka High student groups have been selling breast cancer awareness items to donate to cancer research entities.
4th Annual Spare Nothing for the Cure: 12-2 p.m. and 3-5 p.m. Oct. 28, Brunswick Zone in Chesterfield, MO, or Flamingo Bowl in Downtown St. Louis. This family-friendly bowling event benefits breast cancer research and programs funded by St. Louis affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The entry fee is $25 per bowler or $150 per team of six bowlers. Each registration includes two hours of unlimited bowling, shoe rental and an official event T-shirt. Register here.
Take a Night Out: Several local health care organizations are hosting "Ladies Night Out" events that will feature opportunities to wine and dine along with life-saving screenings and education about breast cancer and other wellness issues for women.
- Mercy will hold one from 5-8 p.m., Oct. 9, at their facility in Ballwin on 15945 Clayton Rd. If you schedule to have your annual mammogram screening during the event, you'll receive a 10-minute chair massage that evening. Call 324-251-6300 to pre-register.
- St. Luke's is hosting theirs from 6-9 p.m., Oct. 25, at the Doubletree Hotel in Chesterfield. The cost for the event is $20 if your register by Oct. 12 by calling 314-205-6267.
Go For a Ride: Trek Bicycle Store is hosting its 7th annual ride to raise awareness at 10 a.m., Oct. 14, at the location on 13922 Manchester Rd. The cost is $25 per rider and 100 percent of the funds raised will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The ride is a family event for all ages and abilities and will features, prizes and on-route support. Click here to register online.
Sista Strut: 8 a.m. rally, 10 a.m. 3k walk, Oct. 6 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park. Cost is $25 and proceeds benefit the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, The Black Women Breast Cancer Survivors Project, and The Breakfast Club, an African American breast cancer support group. Learn more here.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer: 8 a.m. Oct. 27, Forest Park/Upper Muny Parking Lot. This American Cancer Society event does not have a registration fee or a minimum amount to raise to participate, but walkers are encouraged to raise at least $100. Learn more here.
Celebrate Spot: 8 a.m. check in, 9 a.m. walk, Oct. 14 in the Upper Muny Parking lot in Forest Park. Celebrate Spot is a walk for dogs and their people benefitting the Young Women's Breast Cancer Program at Siteman Cancer Center. Registrants can participate in a 1 mile or a 5K walk. Learn more here.
Wear Pink: SSM Health Care campuses in St. Louis will have a photo booth set up in October. Everyone is encouraged to show off pink by wearing photos and props. Participants will receive a printout of their photos. cafeteria, 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. Oct. 24. Fight like a girl t-shirts are also for sale at hospital gift shops.
There are even more ways to spread breast cancer awareness this month by supporting national organizations that are fighting for a cure.
Research centers like Susan G. Komen for the Cure are selling pink ribbon merchandise and it’s a twofer — retail therapy and donating to a cause that affects millions.
You also can support breast cancer research by affixing a special stamp to your mail. The U.S. Postal Service has been selling a stamp commemorating breast cancer awareness for the past 15 years. The agency has raised $75 million so far for research programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.
The American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is organized nationwide and so far more than 8 million people have walked for this cause and raised about $460 million.
