Eureka Arts Council Requests City Donation

Approximately 700 students are serviced by the Eureka Arts Council each summer, and this year should shape up to be a creative experience as well. 

board of aldermen agreed to donate $5,000 to the Eureka Arts Council at Tuesday's meeting, per a request from Karen Crimi, who represented the council. This is the fifth year Eureka has lent a financial hand.

Eureka Arts Council services individuals and groups in Eureka and the surrounding area, particularly through classes in June and July, Crimi said.

The council will host three summer camps:

1. 2012 Summer ShowBiz, June 4 - 22, , for children
2. 2012 Story Theater, June 11 - 22, in Wildwood, for those 6 to 12 years old
3. 2012 ArtSmart Workshops, July 2- 6 and July 9 - 13, also at Fairway Elementary, for adults and older youth

The Eureka Arts Council also receives financial support from The Regional Arts Commission.

Alderman Don Beckerle, Ward 3, asked Crimi if camp attendance had remained the same or expanded in the last two years. She said it had maintained about the same level, and they felt grateful about that, given the overall poor economy.

Alderwoman Marilyn Leistner, Ward 2, asked if the council ever ended up with cash reserves at the end of the summer. Crimi said they typically break even, and recently are receiving more requests for financial assistance from more families—which is where they channel any unallocated funds.
