Teens Can Join Shoe-Per-Bowl Party Sunday

For the fourth year in a row, Living Word United Methodist Church in Wildwoood will host a Shoe-Per-Bowl party for teenagers who are in sixth through twelfth grades. This year's party is Sunday, starting at 5 p.m.

"Admission" to the party is a new or gently used pair of shoes, which are piled at the altar and donated to The Shoeman project, a West St. Louis County-based initiative that provides funding for water wells internationally. Living Word congregants also contribute shoes during Sunday morning worship services the day of Super Bowl each year.

"The Shoe-Per Bowl is a win for everyone. We, of course, get to watch the game on a giant screen and have fun. We also get to de-clutter by donating used shoes," said Adam Mustoe, Living Word's associate pastor of youth ministries.

At Sunday's Super Bowl halftime, students hear from George "The Shoeman" Hutchings himself, and load all the shoes up into his trailer. In the past, the group has collected more than 3,000 pairs.

Shoeman Water Projects sells thousands of pounds of shoes every year for pennies per pound. With the money they receive, they build water wells in developing countries. 

"Shoeman Water Projects help provide people all over the globe with clean water," said Mustoe.

"They just returned from Haiti two weeks ago where they installed several clean water wells. It is an awesome process to be a part of when everybody wins."
