Skip Dairy, Try This Kind of Milk Instead

Almond milk does the body good, too.

If you haven't tried almond milk yet, I highly recommend it. Almond milk is made from grinding raw, soaked almonds and water, and then straining the liquid, which is the "milk."

The unique flavor is light and a tad nutty. It is most commonly used as a milk substitute, topping off coffee, making a smoothie or in cereal.

Almond milk is vitamin rich, and contains good amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B12, Riboflavin and zinc.

A glass of plain almond milk is around 60 to 70 calories. It is safe even for people who live with milk allergies or who are lactose intolerant. It also contains no cholesterol and is low in sodium. Foods low in sodium and cholesterol help the body to maintain better heart health and a normal blood pressure.

The vitamin D in almond milk helps improve the way human cells function and helps with immunity to health threats.

Almond Breeze and Silk brands are my favorites for taste and texture. Keep in mind, almond milk does not contain sugar. However the flavored milks, such as vanilla and chocolate do, so make sure to read labels and be mindful of the amount of sugar you are consuming daily. I use the plain almond milk in my cereal and the vanilla almond milk as a snack when I'm having a sweet craving, which really works for me.

Make sure to pick some up this weekend and add it to your fridge as a dairy substitute, or for some variety in your diet. You can't go wrong with the low calorie, high nutrition benefits. If you're feeling adventureous, try and make some fresh almond milk yourself.
