Get Out: Things to Do May 26 - 29

Get out and enjoy this long, fun-filled Memorial Day weekend. A Summer Kick-Off Celebration, Storm Relief for Joplin Pets, Friday Night BBQ, Literacy Class for Kids, Greek Fest 2011, Rib America Festival, Legislative Forum Breakfast, and Senior Olympics!


  • Where:
    One Lucky Mutt; Thursday, May 26, through Sunday, May 29.
    Why Go:
    Take much needed relief for pet supplies to help those affected by the storms in Joplin. Seeking food, treats, blankets, newspaper, towels and gently used beds.

  • Where: Daniel Boone Library; Thursday, May 26, from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
    Why Go: Need practice reading? How about practicing your reading to a dog or a cat? The mission of Whiskers and Tales is to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of certified pet therapy teams as literacy mentors.
    Pricing: Free.

  • Where:
    Eureka City Hall; Friday, May 27, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
    Why Go:
    Take the family to celebrate the start of summer! Meet the day camp staff of Eureka Parks and Recreation and enjoy an evening of crafts, games, snacks, entertainment and more! After the bash, stay for the Starlight Movie Series first movie of the summer, "Shrek Forever After."
    Pricing:
    Free.

  • Where:
    Wildwood Schnucks; Friday, May 27, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    Why Go:
    To take advantage of some tasty salmon, pork steaks, chicken breasts, hamburgers, brats, and hot dogs; plus wine and beer sampling, to go along with your meal.

  • Where: 
    Eureka-Pacific Elks Lodge, 19 West 1st St. in Eureka, Saturday, May 28, and Sunday, May 29 from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m.
    Why Go:  To help a community totally devastated by one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history on Sunday. Seeking water, blankets, personal hygiene products, diapers, clothes, hand sanitizers, sunscreen, non-perishable food items and first aid supplies.

  • Where:
    Assumption Greek Orthodox Church; Friday, May 27, through Monday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
    Why Go:
    To have a wonderful taste of Greece on this side of the Atlantic. Come by for great greek food, entertainment and fun!

    Soldier's Memorial Plaza; Friday, May 27 through Monday, May 30, times vary.
    Why Go:
    Check out a fun-filled event that features award-winning barbecue, music, and more!

    To support of one of the most prestigious senior games in the country and get inspired to greatness yourself.
