A public hearing on the Rockwood Meadows project is scheduled for a May 28 Jefferson County Council meeting.

Called Rockwood Meadows, the development covers around 60 acres just to the northeast of the Missouri Route W and Route 109 intersection. According to planning documents, it would have 21 16-unit apartment buildings along with six commercial lots occupying 11 acres on the front end. Slavik Family Tract Focus for Development Debate in Wildwood

The 50-acre parcel of land would lose its commercial land use designation under the city's revamped Town Center Plan, a move championed by some and opposed by others.

The future of Wildwood’s commercial development and the viability of its revamped Town Center Plan is once again the focus of debate over the fate of a large, undeveloped piece of land near the city’s center. At a recent city council meeting, an argument emerged over a 4-2 recommendation from the city’s Planning/Economic Development/Parks Committee to keep a change in land use that would discourage large-scale commercial development at the 50-acre parcel known as the “Slavik Family Tract.” The Slavik property is one of four that were set aside to be dealt with individually after they proved to be a hurdle in passing an update to the city's comprehnsive zoning plan.  Proponents of the change included Mayor Tim Woerther and Council Member …

Must we have a gas station, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Walgreens, Walmart, grocery store, car dealer and empty junk strip mall on every corner of land...if I want their services I will drive the 10-15 minutes to their establishments...that's why I moved out here...to get away from all of that...another words I say no to commercial land use...   more ›

Wildwood Looking to Shield Greenway Trail from Highway 100 Traffic

The city has approved a contract with an engineer firm for the design of steel-backed timber guardrails along portions of the pedestrian pathway that run within 10 feet of the busy highway.

Joggers and bikers on Wildwood’s Greenway Trail may have noticed that there are portions of the asphalt pathway that run a little close to the vehicles zipping by on Highway 100. In an effort to help protect those who use it, the Wildwood City Council is planning to install a steel-backed timber guardrail along these portions of the trail, specifically the areas that are within 10 feet of the highway. Last Monday, the council approved the first reading of a contract with Alta Planning + Design to come up with a design for the project, which can then be bid out to other contractors. Public Works Director Ryan Thomas outlined the project to the council, explaining that the 80 percent of the $29,000 cost of the design work will be covered by …

New Management Looking to Grow Wildwood Farmer's Market

The farmer's market will hold its first event of the summer season May 18 at Wildwood's Town Center Plaza.

When the Wildwood Farmer’s Market opens for the summer season this year, it will be under the guidance of new management that city officials hope can help boost its popularity. George and Renee Sackett, managers of the nearby Ellisville Farmer’s Market, received the official blessing from the city council April 22 to take over the day-to-day operations of the event, scheduled for Saturdays starting May 18. Began in 2009, the Wildwood Farmer’s Market has already had three management changes in its short history. The latest move is aimed at helping the market reach its “desire potential,” according to a report from Wildwood Parks and Planning Director Joe Vujnich. Vujnich said the city approached Rene Sackett after noting the excellent …

Republican senators Brian Nieves and John Lamping will speak at an event tonight in Chesterfield featuring several speakers on what they are calling a federal takeover of education.

A pair of Missouri senators are bringing their campaign to stop the implementation of national education standards in Missouri called “Common Core" to the West County area Thursday night. Republican Sen. Brian Nieves and John Lamping, both Republicans, will participate in an event at 7 p.m. Thursday night featuring speakers from Common Core opposition groups. One of the problems with the man-made global warming "community" is their desire to absolutely shut down any dissent. They are never content to argue with facts. They have to shut everyone else up. And, if they were to succeed with convincing nations to spend trillions of dollars to halt "global warming" they would not alter global temperature even a whole degree, if at all. What is the use of …   more ›

Wildwood Moves Forward on Final Agreement for High-Speed Internet

Residents of the city's most rugged rural areas may not have to wait much longer to access the modern Web.

For Wildwood residents eager to be connected to high-speed Internet access, the wait might seem as interminable as the buffering screens they see when trying to stream online video.   However, on Monday, the Wildwood City Council approved the first reading of what will be the final agreement with the two service providers, Wisper ISP and Bays ET, contracted to finally bring the technology to city's rural areas.  In presenting the agreement to the council, which sets the responsibilities and duties of the companies and the city, Wildwood Planning and Parks Director Joe Vujnich said it contained a couple of key provisions that were worth highlighting. The first is that the companies will each be charged a licensing fee to recoup the city’s …

Name Change for Wildwood's Old Slave Road Turned Down by Committee

The issue now moves to the city council for a final vote May 13.

Residents seeking a change for the private street where they live may not be granted their request after a city commission recommended against renaming Old Slave Road in Wildwood. The matter now moves to the city council for final consideration at its May 13 meeting. According to a report in the St. Louis Suburban Journals, the city’s Administration/Public Works Committee voted 6-1 April 9 in favor of keeping the name. The name dates back to 1979, but the area’s history goes back much father. As previously reported by Patch, it's home to several cemeteries, including unmarked burial sites, which contain the graves of former slaves. It’s also the former home of notable Wildwood resident Elijah Madison, who likely earned his freedom fighting…

Then Mary, perhaps we should rewrite all the history books because of all the atrocities that have happened in the past..The current name does honor the slaves and African Americans that have lived there..anyone who is uncomfortable with the name, should have never moved to Old Slave Road to begin with...don't move out here and try and change our history..the name is a reminder of the historical …   more ›

Todd Akin: 'No Grudges' After U.S. Senate Defeat

The former U.S. Representative says the Republican Party needs conservatives in it moving forward.

The official ceremony was over, but still plenty of people who wanted to press the flesh with the man in Congress who helped steer a bill through to a conclusion. People who wanted their picture taken to commemorate the day. For a few minutes, it may have seemed like Todd Akin was back in Congress representing much of West St. Louis County on Friday, after a ceremony dedicating the Ballwin Post Office branch on Manchester Road in honor of Army Specialist Peter Navarro, the Wildwood native who died serving his country in Iraq. At this ceremony, Akin was in the front row of the audience, not on the riser giving remarks. That fell to Ann Wagner, the Ballwin Republican who succeeded Akin when he ran for the U.S. Senate last fall. The general …
