True Blood s05e01 Premiere Hoyt and Jessica are having troubles and I'm kind of relieved. It is not that I don't like Hoyt and Jess. I find the two of them immensely likable. However, Hoyt asking Jessica to marry him in the Season 3 finale made me cringe. There were several in the fandom (me included) that were up in arms after Bill proposed to Sookie at the end of Season 2. "It's so ridiculous!" We ranted. "They've only been together for six weeks and she doesn't really know him."
Well, Hoyt and Jessica had known each other for an even shorter period of time than Bill and Sookie, and they'd spent most of it apart. True Blood Season 5 Episode 1 Premiere They both were each other's first relationship and they both had lived sheltered lives as a result of controlling parents. Jessica and Hoyt remind me of couples, in real life, that get married young as either a show of rebellion against their parents or so that they can finally have sex (or both). Usually, these marriages are doomed. I believe that you need to live a little before you settle down and make a commitment. Both Hoyt and Jess don't know much about themselves, sans the parental strings, and have much growing to do. Whether they will grow together or apart is still up in the air though I have a strong feeling that things won't end well for these two.
Honestly, I don't have much to say about this plot development since it was evident from casting calls that Bill had obtained a position of power. The exact level of his power was revealed in spoilers last week so I knew it was going to happen. Thus, not much about this scene surprised me. True Blood Season 5 Episode 1 Premiere Considering Bill's impulsiveness, inability to see the big picture, and general crap plans; I think Alan Ball is setting this character up for a big fall. I have no idea how long Bill will be on the throne but I'm positive he will screw things up. Royally.

Just what is Tommy-Boy doing with my favorite overbearing potty-mouth? Shit fucker this can't be good for Hoyt and Jess and those two have enough problems as it is. What the hell is up with Claudine? True Blood Season 5 Episode 1 Premiere I don't think she deliberately led Sookie into a trap. However, at the very least, she was manipulated into leading Sookie into a trap. This is not a good trait for a fairy godmother. It might be a good thing if she bites the dust.
The episode: I don't know about the rest of you, but every once in a while, I question my own taste. Here are two things I liked over the weekend that critical mass suggests were not very good: January Jones in X-Men: First Class, and the season premiere of True Blood. Of the latter, I'll say this: things started pretty poorly. Sookie's trip to the land of fairies, or whatever, was borderline True Blood Season 5 Episode 1 Premiere embarrassing, Gary Cole's cameo included. But it did allow for the plot twist that I think could save the entire series: When Sookie returns to Bon Temps, it turns out that 15 minutes in the alternate realm translated to 12 months and two weeks in the real world.
Subsequently, much is different in the real world (well, real insofar as True Blood is far from reality), and hooray for that. Just about every character in Bon Temps had reached a dead end by the conclusion of Season 3, save for maybe Eric and Jessica. Now, the writers have changed the game substantially. Still, all of the plotlines ran almost completely disparately of each other. And that is mildly disconcerting.
True Blood Season 5 Episode 1 Premiere Here is a roundup of what worked: Bill, we discover very late, is the new king of Louisiana, presumably the spoils of victory from his season-ending, and so-far unseen, battle with the vampire queen Sophie-Ann. And he has a girlfriend. Arlene had Rene's baby and is in constant fear that the child she and Terry are raising has inherited his father's murderous tendencies. Jessica and Hoyt, after living together for a year, are starting to have issues with the whole vampire/human relationship thing.
Eric is still rad, thanks for asking. Annnnnnnd here's what didn't work: Jason is a full-fledged police officer and significantly more capable at his job that Andy, who is addicted to V. But he's also still involved with the children of Hot Shot, and his life is put in danger as a result of that near the end of Episode 1. The Jason-as-a-cop stuff is fine, but the Hot Shot story didn't click last season, and it remains a questionable plot device.
True Blood Season 5 Episode 1 Premiere Lafayette and Jesus are delving further into witchcraft, which seems like it will be a significant part of the new season. Hope that gets interesting, real quick-like. Tara is a mixed martial arts fighter in New Orleans. Oh, and a lesbian. I'd be really into this not going anywhere. Sam has shape-shifting friends. OK. File under, we'll see: Sam's brother Tommy and Hoyt's crazy mother: what is happening there? That's it for Week 1. Ultimately, a solid start. Hopefully they tie things together a bit as the season progresses, but they're heading in the right direction, and that is more than I expected from the start.
