Wine and Chocolate: Pairings for Valentine's Day
Dreaming up the right Valentine's Day gifts benefits from a little creativity...or tasting before purchasing, such as at Wines of Wildwood's chocolate fountain open house this Friday evening.
Don't forget Valentine's Day next Tuesday, Feb. 14, warns Karl Hagnauer, co-owner of Wines of Wildwood, citing that "dog houses are very uncomfortable this time of year!"
For those wondering how to combine wine, Hagnauer, and his wife, Cheri, offer the following tips this month:
With lobster: Nothing goes better with buttery lobster than an exceptional white Burgundy. These French Chards are rich yet balanced: Try Chateau de la Maltroye Chassagne Mountrachet 2007 ($59.99). He said for people feeling more patriotic and less extravagant, he suggests Napa Valley's Chateau La Grande Roche Chardonnay 2010 ($20.99). "It's made in the French style, but with a nice California accent."
With beef tenderloin: "We love to pair this special cut with one of our favorite higher end wines," she said. CJ Melka Cabernet Sauvignon 2009. ($55.99). This staff favorite is elegant and intriguingly layered, and is one of the store's most popular wines in this price range. A less expensive alternative is Napa Valley's Rubus Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 ($23.99). "We recently tried this wine and were blown away by its elegance and flavor."
For sparkling celebrations: They love Grower's Champagne, which means the wine is estate grown and produced by family wineries, instead of mass produced factory bubbly. Try Rene Jeoffroy Premier Cru Brut Champagne ($59.99). For a lesser priced alternative, try Lucian Albrecht Brut Rose ($22.99).
Wines of Wildwood also offers a variety of Valentine's gifts, such as:
- Bissinger's Valentine's chocolates, including milk chocolate hearts and lollipops
- Boxed assortments
- Create-your-own gift, including popular olive oil truffles
- Murray River salted caramels
- A "Bucket of Love" featuring a sparkling wine or champagne, champagne with glasses and Bissinger's chocolates—all placed in a heart-embellished decorative wine bucket ready for chilling and thrilling
- Collectible wine, decanters, wine glasses, racks, openers, decorative stoppers, customized wine gift baskets, picnic backpacks and totes
- Gift cards
Hagnauer said another thoughtful gift is to enroll loved ones in the Wines of Wildwood Wine Of The Month Club. It provides a 10 percent discount on every regularly priced item in the store, free admission to monthly open houses, wine class discounts and admission to special, members-only events.
The store's staff will host a Chocolate Fountain open house at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday. Admission is $10 at the door.
Customers who shop at Wines of Wildwood and spend at least $50 anytime between Saturday and Valentine's Day on Tuesday will get a free $10 gift card to the store.
