A 22-year-old Wildwood man who was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) early Tuesday morning faces other charges, including an attempt to bite a police officer.

Cape Girardeau Police Department officer Darin Hickey said a vehicle driven by Brandon Gross was observed entering the front yard of a residence in the 500 block of North Sprigg Street at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. Units from the police department and the Southeast Missouri State University Department of Public Safety were notified. He said witnesses indicated the driver then drove west.

Gross eventually was pulled over near the university for a traffic stop. After a field-sobriety test, officers determined Gross was impaired and arrested him for DWI, careless and imprudent driving and property damage, Hickey said.

Hickey told Patch witnesses said Gross was spinning his vehicle's tires and driving at excessive rates of speed.

Hickey said once Gross was in custody at the police station, he became biligerant, combative and attempted to bite an officer on the arm while he was being booked. Under a city ordinance, attempted assaults on a police officer fall under misdemeanor assault.

Gross was placed in protective custody because of his impaired state and was released Tuesday afternoon after being held 12 hours, with a summons for each of his four charges, Hickey said.

His court date is scheduled for April 18 in Cape Girardeau Municipal Court.

Hickey said it was not confirmed if Gross is a student attending the university.
