Was Wildcats' Winning Streak Enough to Win Suburban Southwest Softball Tournament?
No.2-ranked Eureka High School Varsity Softball players won all their games against other area high school teams this week, but on Thursday night faced the Webster Groves Statesmen for the championship game.
The 2012 Suburban Southwest Softball Tournament championship game came down to the 7th inning Thursday evening, with a tied game between the Eureka High School Wildcats and the Webster Groves Statesmen. With Wildcat runners on third and first, a perfectly laid bunt down first base line by catcher Syd Tockman enabled her speedy teammate Kristin McIntyre to sprint to the home plate to win the championship for Eureka.
All games for the tournament were played Tuesday and Wednesday at the Chesterfield Athletic Association. In addition to Webster Groves and Eureka, varsity softball teams from the following high schools participated: Fox, Mehlville, Northwest, Oakville, Parkway Central, Seckman, Rockwood Summit, Parkway West, Parkway North, Parkway South, Lindbergh, Marquette, Kirkwood and Lafayette.
Thursday's championship competition was a tight one throughout the game. During the bottom of the 3rd inning, Wildcat Jessica Poore scored on a hit by Jamie Fowle, giving Eureka the lead 1-0.
But the Statesmen answered back in the top of the 5th inning to tie the game.
It wasn't until the bottom of the 7th inning that Eureka picked up the momentum again to push the game into a 2-1 victory.
