An armed robbery in Wildwood is a rare event, said Capt. Kenneth Williams, commander of the St. Louis County Police Department-Wildwood (6th) Precinct, regarding a crime that occurred at 12:02 a.m. Thursday at a Wildwood woman's home located on a cul-de-sac at the 2000 block Medicine Bow Drive and Gunnison Gorge Drive, which runs off Clayton Road about 1/4 quarter mile from Lafayette High School.

In fact, Williams told Patch "part 1 crime" in Wildwood had decreased by 23.2 percent during the second quarter of this year compared to the same quarter of the year in 2011. Part 1 crime includes murder, rape, larceny, arson, motor vehicular theft and assault.

"In Wildwood, we had no single robbery last year or this year to date, until Thursday," said Williams.

Out of the areas serviced by St. Louis County police, Wildwood has the lowest number of felony crimes, he said.

"We want Wildwood residents to know they are safe and secure, but to always be diligent about reporting suspicious people or behaviors," said Williams.

Regarding Thursday's midnight armed robbery, which resulted in two suspects taking the women's purse and baby stroller, Williams said the robbers fled on foot. "A canine unit searched the area, and officers did another visual search again during the day on Thursday, without any results," he said.

Williams said the woman told police she had driven into her garage on Thursday, and was on her cell phone or about to get on her cell phone while still inside her car, when her garage door would not close and she then was confronted by an armed robber. He demanded money, the woman told police.

Detectives continued to canvass the neighborhood to talk with any potential witnesses.

The investigation is ongoing. It is now being handled by St. Louis County detectives in the Bureau of Crimes Against People. Anyone with additional information or leads about this armed robbery should call the Wildwood Precinct at (636) 458-9194.
