Swimmers Back into Pool after Vandalism Incident

After intruders vandalized the Eureka High School swimming pool during Thanksgiving break, swim team members dive back into training. Eureka Police Department officers arrested or detained the individuals involved.

After intruders vandalized Eureka High School's pool and gym areas during Thanksgiving break, the school's competitive swim team members are back in familiar waters.

Eureka Police Chief Michael Wiegand said a police report was filed Tuesday and that the perpetrators were arrested or detained.

"A burglary and destruction of property report cite that the incident occurred Nov. 26, 2010, at 11:09 p.m.," he said.  "Two adults and four juveniles were involved."

The intruders entered the school through an unlocked door, Wiegand said.

"Six persons were arrested or detained, as a result of the damage," he said.

Adults are considered anyone 17 years and older.  The names of the juveniles will not be released and charges are pending, Wiegand said.

Damage to the school's pool was deemed "extensive," and estimated to cost  more than $10,000.

Wiegand said the police report filed by Eureka police and school resource officer Michael Smith indicated the incident was reported by Eureka's athletic director Jason Green.

"(Green's) statements outlined that he found chemicals floating in the pool from fire extinguishers being sprayed there, and on the equipment of the school's aquatic sports department, which rendered the pool and items unoperable," Wiegand said.

After viewing the school's surveillance videos, Smith discovered the individuals involved and typical police procedures now are being followed.

Monday night, Eureka High School physical education teacher and swim coach Sharon Wasson said the pool underwent extensive cleaning, but that the swimmers were happy to have it return to operational. St. Louis-based catastrophe and restoration company CATCO, handled the cleaning project.  She said they did a phenomenal job with the situation.

Rockwood Swim Club students, a program offered through Rockwood Community Education, also could not hold classes at the pool for the past week.

Wasson, who was just nominated for Powerbar's coach of the year, said the high school teams practiced at Lafayette High School's pool on Thursday evening and at Rockwood Summit High School's pool Friday and Saturday.

"We were out of our pool for a week, but thank goodness the other schools came to our rescue.  They were very generous," she said.

In fact, Wasson said she really liked practicing at Summit's eight-lane pool.  "They have a heavenly pool setup."

"And we really are grateful for the awesome custodial staff we have at Eureka. They did an amazing job," she said.

Wasson said she was most proud of the fact that not one Eureka swimmer complained during "this entire mess."

Eureka Girls' Varsity AquaCats have their first meet Dec. 9 at the Rockwood Summit Quad in Fenton.
