St. Louis County Police Chief Wants to Arm School Officials With Guns
In the wake of the Newtown, CT school massacre, St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch will visit schools this week to discuss increasing security, including putting guns in elementary schools.

St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch and police officers will begin visiting St. Louis County schools Monday morning, according to KMOV-TV.
Fitch said he's received numerous calls from area schools concerned about security since Friday's mass shooting in a Newtown, CT, elementary school. He said officers will step up patrols around all elementary schools in the 12 school districts within their service.
Fitch acknowledges most high schools and some middle schools, including those in West St. Louis County, have armed school resource officers.Â
However, elementary schools are not normally protected by officers. Fitch wants to see armed resource officers or armed school officials in those schools, according to KSDK-TV.
He points out that Sandy Hook Elementary School conducted threat drills and locked its doors once class started, but that did not stop suspected shooter Adam Lanza from gunning down 20 children and six women Friday.Â
St. Louis area schools also lock their doors when class starts and conduct threat drills. However, this week, Fitch plans to meet with school officials throughout the county to discuss increasing security at schools even more.Â
His proposal includes putting guns in the schools, particularly the elementary schools. He said the weapons would remain locked up with trained staff members having access to them in an emergency.Â
What do you think about Chief Fitch's proposal? Do you have a better suggestion? Post your thoughts in the comments below.

Really? Let's see...the shooter in Connecticut used guns that were purchased legally, was determined to create as much carnage as possible against our kids. He was apparently wearing a bullet proof vest. He was mentally ill. He carried weapons that pro gun people just love to defend being able to own. And in just a few minutes he shot and killed 20 six and seven year-olds and 6 teachers. Just imagine that gun-toting killer going up against a kindergarten teacher. Really? Only when we change our minds about guns will we begin to end these types of gun-related mass murders. Has the chief noticed that is it almost unheard of in other countries? I am not advocating taking away all guns. I just want some sanity. The chief's proposal is not sanity. It's just more of the same.

Guns exist. You can't wave a wand and make them disappear from the world.
Since the above fact is irrefutable, the question becomes why do we reserve schools as places only bad people can have them? It's not a good thing and our children deserve better. Nuts like this are attracted to schools because they've been given a government guarantee that they alone will have a weapon there. Remove the guarantee and they'll go somewhere else.
Severe restrictions on gun ownership didn't help in Norway.

Complete firearms ban in China wasn't the answer either.

31 school shootings in the U.S. since Columbine, 14 in the rest of the world combined in that same timeframe.
The Norway shootings were an aberration, whereas in the United States they are happening with some regularity.
It's also worth noting that there were no casualties in the Chinese incident. Imagine if the loon had a semi-automatic weapon available to him.
Why do you need large-capacity magazines, and semi-automatic weapons, Greg? Give me a good reason, please. Oh, and I'm a parent of a six year old in the Rockwood school system. Not a "propagandist." You, however, clearly have a business interest and agenda.

That's insane! So I should send my child to a school where there are guns readily available for children to get their hands on? What happens when a teacher, principal, or janitor gets over taken by an angry, outraged, out of control teenager that is twice their size? What happens when one of these teachers, principals, or janitors has a mental break and decides to take out half a classroom with them?? No, I don't think guns should be readily available for people to get their hands on. I'm also tired of hearing people saying the bad guys have guns and they're the ones that break the rules and don't follow the law... My fear is the person that thinks they would know what to do in a crisis situation and they cause far more harm than good. What about people "you" dean to be mentally sound, only to find out how wrong you were and now they have full access to deadly weapons in the presents of entire schools filled with unsuspecting children. I think if you want more security officers or police presents in schools, people who are trained professionals, that is another story. I think if you want more security measures in schools such as locking, bulletproof classrooms and emergency hotlines in every classroom that are direct lines to local and state police then wonderful! But when you ask me to send my child to school where every adult can carry a weapon, it's time for my child to stay at home and be taught from here.

Caffeinated,
I searched all my posts and couldn't find any reference to large cap magazines or semi-automatic weapons. I didn't realize I needed them until you told me I did. This is a common tactic used by irrational people. Change the subject and attack when they don't have an answer. My post was about how a misguided public policy has turned out so badly.
I am directly addressing your points even though you changed the subject to avoid addressing mine.
31 shootings…..That government guarantee got us most of them.
I never said parents were propagandists.
My home-schooled kids are 8 and 13 (and both darn good shots). We let the older one go to 8th grade to see what school was like. He brought home his book on the Constitution and Bill of Rights I pulled my copy off the shelf. We did a line by line so he could see how many things in his book were blatantly untrue. The younger one will not be going to these propagandists.
Now for my supposed business interest. When I lived in St. Louis I taught Personal Protection with a handgun for years -as a volunteer. When CCW passed and there was tons of money to be made, I didn't. This is a calling for me. I would show people how to stay alive if I had to do it for free.
As to my agenda….Yes, I have one. It's for my kids to grow up in a free country where BAD people are the ones who are afraid.

Sorry Greg, I assumed you would object to restrictions on large cap mags and semi-automatic weapons. My mistake.
So, you're onboard with legislation restricting sale and possession of these death machines?

I think his idea is good but will not work. I do not care who you are people will panic under pressure. If you have to to unlock a gun under pressure more than likely people will freeze. Here is the deal. If you want to be safe I would suggest raising money for the schools and investing in bullet proof windows around the school. I would then have one weapons specialist a police guard etc at the front inside of the school. He is the only one that will buzz in individuals. Most individuals comming to commit a crime look crazy and he will be trained for that. He will behind bullet proof glass so there is no way this individual can break in. There is upfront cost for the glass but you will have a lower cost in back end with one security guard. Lets not waist time training individuals on guns. Teachers have enough to worry about. Let us donate money for structure glass protection and then have one specialist to do his job protect our kids

Kim,
It sounds like every single thing you ever learned about guns was taught to you by people who have never touched one. Please understand I am not blaming you. Most non gun members of our society have unwittingly fallen victim to these propagandists without ever stopping to consider that everything they think they know about the subject is probably false. Was every single thing you ever "learned" about guns your whole life brought to you by those with an irrational fear and hatred of them? Just as you wouldn't seek reading lessons from the illiterate, as a thinking person you should begin to suspect some of the things you thought you knew about guns are false. Gun free zones are where evil goes to rack up a big body count. Teachers fighting against bullets by throwing their body at them is how I see our gun free schools policy working out and we can do better.

Get this going and I will donate firearms, or the money toward their training. The reason people keep going and shooting up schools is because they are easy targets. Same goes for the "gun free" movie theater in Colorado--the signs didn't stop the bad guy did they?
Ten years ago the federal government starting arming airline pilots (FFDOs). To date, with the thousands of FFDOs and over a million hours flown since the program started, there has not been a single airline pilot go crazy and start shooting up the plane. Obama cut the funding for the program, and the pilots stepped up to pay for it themselves. Why couldn't a similar program work in schools with proper training and procedure.

Greg...you have found two examples of gun violence in other countries. Good for you. Obviously you can probably find a few more. But there is no other country in the world that can come even close to our pathetic record...records that are being broken even as I write this note!
Here is a story which highlights the fact that being armed doesn't necessarily make you safe. These are trained police officers. Contrast that with the people you want to arm.

Guns are really our friends. They protect us from harm and maintain our freedom. It is the culture of corruption, constant airing of violence on the medias, and violent TV and Cinema content that hurt our nation.Children need to believe in good and hope and the impossible to advance our species not the dark and evil aspects. Our children have been desensitized to violence since the Viet Nam war media coverage. Enough is enough. Media be more responsible and don't cover for the sake of news for days. Banning guns is like putting a bandaid on to heal a broken leg. Get to the root of the problem in our culture: Parental resonsibility and the violent content of our culture.

That is by far the most intelligent comment ever posted on this site.
Banning guns, or making them harder to obtain for the other 99.9999% of the public would NOT have prevented this. Per the news he did not buy these guns, his mother or father did.....and they did it legally. Blame it on them for not locking them up, not the dealer that sold them years ago to the parent that passed the background check.
This kid was going to find a way to kill people. If it wasn't a gun, it would have been a bomb, sword, vehicle, fire, etc. Look at countries that have gun bans, you have human bombers. Just like all the others, this kid came from a broken home. Father figure was absent.
I blame the media for this in addition to his family. Violence all over air gathers people's attention. That's all this kid wanted--attention. Look at how much air time the Colorado shooter got when they started digging into his life and examining why he did it. This kid saw that, and knew how much attention he would get. Why do you think you have all these copy cats in the last few days? Ignore these people and they will just kill themselves quietly. Suicides don't make the news unless there's a murder preceding it.

Since the 1970s after Israel instituted the program of armed citizen guards & teachers in the schools, not a single child has been murdered in an Israeli school. Concealed carry law serves as more of a crime deterrent. What kind of criminal would attempt to victimize a citizen that might be able to effectively defend themselves against the crime? Criminals already have blatant disregard for the law, and in the case where guns would be made illegal by the law, do you really think that criminals would just give up their guns based on the laws they already disregard? No! The only persons affected by oppressive gun control laws is the law abiding citizen, whom, in that case, would no longer be able to effectively defend themselves against the illegal gun toting criminal. People who are "pro gun control" have not thought the consequences through...they are merely reacting to their emotional state. I implore them to STOP and THINK. Below is a link to the article.

Allow teachers and staff to conceal carry, and remove the federal gun free zone restriction that make our schools killing fields for criminals.
