Jimmy John's to Jump into Eureka

From ice cream to freakishly fast meals, Eureka may add gourmet sandwiches to the mix of drive-throughs and fast food available from Fifth Street-based restaurants.

Eureka Planning and Zoning Commissioners are hosting a public hearing Wednesday evening about the possibility of a new Jimmy John's restaurant taking over the stand-alone retail building formerly operated as a Dairy Queen location.

Morrell Hilltop Investments representatives are requesting a special use permit for a restaurant with a drive-through component located at 14 Hilltop Village Center Drive.

Ironically, Eureka-Wildwood Patch readers suggested a sandwich shop when Patch asked what would be a good business to relocate in the former DQ spot.

With Jimmy John's motto "So Fast, You'll Freak," the restaurant chain prides itself on quick deliveries.

The restaurant was initiated in 1983 by a 19-year-old with two first names that would answer America's cry for lunch – Jimmy John Liautaud.

Wednesday's public hearing will start at 7 p.m. at the Eureka City Hall.
