Interstate 270 to be Expanded in West St. Louis County
Missouri Department of Transportation officials will host a public meeting on Monday, Jan. 30, to reveal preliminary construction plans and possible impact of the project, including Interstate 44.
Missouri Department of Transportation representatives will unveil plans for widening Interstate-270, at a public meeting next week.
The meeting will be 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 30, at the The Lodge Des Peres, 1050 Des Peres Road, Des Peres, 63131.
"The meeting is to discuss a project to improve the flow of traffic on Interstate 270 between Interstate 44 and Manchester Road by constructing an additional northbound through lane between Interstate 44 and Manchester, and an additional southbound through lane between Dougherty Ferry and I-44," MoDOT stated in a news release Monday.
"Because of roadway restrictions, such as railroad bridges, this will mean narrowing all through lanes to 11 feet wide, similar to what was done on I-44 during the I-64 reconstruction."
MoDOT representatives said crews will try to keep full shoulders along I-270 once the project is complete.
Construction on the expansion project is set to begin later this year, and is expected to be completed in December 2013, according to MoDOT.
There is no presentation planned for the Jan. 30 meeting, so residents can stop by throughout the 3-hour period that evening.
Residents will be able to comment on the project's construction plans, the project’s impact, and construction staging.

Merging traffic into merging traffic is what is creating the problems at I-44 & I-270. As long as the current design is in place, traffic will continue to bunch-up as it attempts to insert itself into the flow. West bound I-44 and East bound I-44 have to merge together at the same time they're trying to merge into north bound I-270 every morning - this is a recipe for a bottleneck and it occurs every workday morning. Every evening, southbound I-270 and northbound I-270 have to merge together before finding a spot in the westbound I-44 traffic and another bottleneck backs up I-270 all the way to I-64 on most days. It's not about the lanes, it's how they're brought together.
