Senior citizens searching for independent living quarters, complete with a ramp into a swim and exercise pool, have something to which to look forward.
The former Days Inn hotel in Eureka is being turned into a full, independent senior living complex of 150 apartments, said Julie Wood, Eureka director of economic development. The building at 15 Hilltop Village Center was last offered commercially as America's Best Value Inn. In the past, it first operated as a Motel 6.
"There will be mostly one bedroom apartments, we believe, with a few two bedroom options," Wood said.
She said the facility will incorporate the hotel's pool and shuffle board area.
The building was purchased from Rockwood Bank.
The first phase of the complex is expected to take about a year to finish; it includes updating the building's facade. The asphalt parking lot across the street from the hotel eventually will torn out to create a park.
Wood just returned from RECON, the largest retail conference in the United States. She said she was there "building trust and familarity" for Eureka's offerings.
