Eureka's 2011 Harvest Moon Walk & 5K Run.

When Eurekans learned about the Harvest Moon Walk & 5K Run last October, many entered—some from as far away as Nevada. The event was held to benefit The Eureka Project, a grassroots effort to raise funds and plan for a new library to be built in Eureka.

This year's Harvest Moon Festival will be held Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m., in Legion Park. Organizers said it will feature family-friendly activities, vendors, a used book sale, and a chili cook-off from 4-7 p.m.—with prizes.

Again this year, there will be a night run. The kids' run starts at 6 p.m. and the adult 3K/5K run will be at 7 p.m.

The event also will have live music and a pumpkin carver.

Race proceeds will be donated to the Eureka Food Pantry, said Julie Wood, Eureka's economic development director. She said the book sale and chili cook-off are being hosted by the Wednesday Club, with those proceeds being donated to various causes championed by the club:  Eureka High School scholarships, the Route 66 Senior Center and the USO in memory of Riley Baker.

Tickets are $6 for general admission; children 5 years and younger are $2. A general admission four-pack can be bought for $18.
