The idea of a new Eureka Recreational Center has been about 15 years in the making, with Eureka residents several years ago passing a sales tax to cover the funding of such a facility.

On Oct. 28, an official groundbreaking ceremony was hosted at the new site, located off Missouri Route 109 South, to mark the milestone.

Eureka Mayor Kevin Coffey thanked everyone, including city staffers, for patiently manuevering through a necessary, lengthy process. "The team responsible for building the new center also has been patient with staff while we get our dream achieved," he said.

Coffey recognized Eureka Park Board member Ann Moore for being a huge part of the people "seeing things through" and "getting steps done."

The new recreational center will be a great addition to Eureka, said Coffey.

He said the target date for the center to open is during this summer. More pool and fitness equipment recently were added to the plans.
