Entrepreneurial Program Gives College Students Real World Experience

One Eureka High School graduate who's now a Missouri University freshman hopes to paint the town—literally. Brock Gettemeier, originally from Wildwood, has a paint brush in one hand and a cell phone in the other.

Gettemeier is the branch manager of the Wildwood area for Student Painters, an organization that helps college students raise money for school and learn business skills. He currently is booking appointments in Wildwood and surrounding areas. In association with Young Entrepreneurs Across America, Student Painters trains motivated college students how to be successful entrepreneurs.

"I found the internship during my business class when my teacher mentioned that even freshman could get jobs from the business career fair," he said.

"So I went out and bought a suit, and did some research on some internship spots that were listed. Then, when I went to the career fair, the Student Painters' booth really stood out to me as a great opportunity."

Gettemeier is hiring six other employees who also are college students in the area to begin exterior painting jobs the first week in May and work through August.

His goal is 14 jobs and $30,000 in sales sold by the May 1.

Gettemeier was hired in October after several rounds of interviews and beating out other applicants. Student Painter managers undergo training in the spring, and must pass several exams before being allowed in the field.

Student Painters has been in business since 1987. The company evolved as the need for summer jobs for business students grew, specializing in the business of teaching, coaching, and supporting college students in running their own successful small business.

Gettemeier will be working full time this summer, making sure every one of his customers are 100 percent satisfied with every job his company does. He said he doesn’t mind giving up his weekends to get his business up and running. “Sixty hours a week seems like a really large number, but I know opportunities like this don’t come often,” he said.

All painters are Sherwin Williams certified. Each job done by Student Painters' groups carries a one-year guarantee on quality (two years with two coats), and the company carries a $1 million liability insurance and full workers’ compensation of its employees.

Free estimates are available to anyone interested in exterior painting projects. Appointments can be made by contacting Gettemeier at 314-619-4983.
