All the owners, manager and staff of El Nopal Mexican restaurant want for Christmas is to open in their new location! Customers who liked their margaritas and menu will be happy to know the restaurant is not leaving Eureka—they've been closed for the past three weeks so they remodel what used to be Johnny's Place restaurant in Old Town Eureka.
Johnny's Place closed suddenly in October. See related articles:
El Nopal formerly was located at 110a Hilltop Village Center Drive. The new location is 106 S. Central Avenue.
Owner David Escamilla said they are remodeling the new space while working through the process to secure new licenses and permits. "We would like to open before January," he said.
They already replaced the carpet with tile, and painted new colors on the walls.
El Nopal manager Facundo Mendoza said he is transferring most of his former staff, and will be hiring a few new people.
Mendoza said they will add some new platter options. "We're really happy about the outside seating area here, and being able to have it open to customers even in the winter."
He said they also would consider fixing up an unused space in the back of the building to eventually have additional, outdoor patio space. "We hope to do a new deck out back."
One new area will be a party room, which provides privacy. Mendoza said he likely will have a flat screen television in the room, and possibly a Wii hookup for children. When not being used for special events, the room will be used to service more customers.
Mendoza estimates they had a 160-seat capacity at their former location, compared to 95 to 100 in the new space.
"We hope to hang TVs everywhere, even in the outside area out front," he said.
Do you think this is a good move for El Nopal?

Every restaurant that has been in that space has gone out of business. Parking in Old Town Eureka is limited, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Let's not forget the noise from the train tracks either. In my uneducated opinion, this was a terrible move for El-Nopal.

The City recently added 40 more spaces to old town with the parking area behind the Wine House and have improved signage to help visitors locate the lot. There are a lot of great things happening in Old Town with the erection of Red Door and the expansion of Art by Grzyb and the Wine House. I hope Eurekans will give it a chance in the new location.

El Nopal and Los Cabos create zero jobs for Americans.
I do not see any signs that say they are hiring. Be proud to be an American and own an American buisness.

Julie, we'll give it a chance for sure. I'm just optimistic about their new location.

I have always loved the food but the last 2 times we ordered food from there its was horrible and the guacamole was terrible I hope when they get settled into their new place the food improves or I will go else where

I agree about the new location...unfortunately there has not been one restaurant who has been there for more than a couple of years. The food at El Nopal is very mediocre so I predict it won't be long before they close up, also.

I on the other hand am excited for their move and think that it's a good location for them to be in...people will find parking spaces, and they've been in Eureka for a long time, so changing locations to an area with a nightlife and more to offer than their old plaza, will be a positive thing not a negative. I personally will go there more often now because of their more convenient location!

Our family has been to El Nopal 3-4 times and have had crappy food there every time. I'd rather go to Taco Bell!! El Agave in Pacific is WAY Better and even this new place in Legends Plaza is not bad. I hope El Nopal steps up and improves their food and service and maybe we will give them another try. We so need some decent restaurants in Eureka as in my opinion at this time we have none. Come on Eureka, demand good food in this town as we all love it here. Seafood maybe???? :-)

We always have liked El Nopal and they give good service. The other restaurants went out of business because they were a bit more upscale. I predict that El Nopal will thrive in this location, just as they did in their old location.

Jo: My exact sentiments. I love El Nopal and believe they will fit right in downtown.

How many businesses actually post "now hiring" other than fast food restaurants. I would be interested in the number of "Americans" who are seeking positions at this restaurant versus the so-called "non-Americans". I find the use of the word "American" here and in the post placed on Facebook ....well, I won't use the word I want to say....but troubling in the least.

Some of you people are real dopes ( how do you like being demeaned?) . If you don't like the food, don't eat it. If you don't like Mexicans, too bad, grow up, they live here! I don't see "Americans" (admit it, you really mean white people) beating a path to their door for a job. You must not be looking too hard, there are white people working there.... the owner's family. Besides, most if not all, are members of the community and spend their wages on gas, food, electricity, etc. All the things required to survive.... they require that too.... or do you think they have a magic Mexican fairy that makes it all appear at their door step? They've spent many of their dollars with me, and I at their restaurant. Lastly, hide behind an alias and you've proven your petty nature and your opinion has no merit. If you are going to defame and point a finger, don't be a coward, use your whole name.

Well said Eddie!! Don't let "Uncle Sams" ignorance bother you too much, he probably doesn't know any better. He proves it by using the word Americans, what, there are no central or south Americans? People in Canada don't live in North America? And you are correct, I have seen people at both restaurants that are of all different ethnicities, and if they are Hispanic, does that automatically mean they are illegally here? Grow up "uncle sam"!! As far as El Nopal, they have slipped a little, but I wish them luck in their new location, and think it will be a good move.
