Wyman Welcomes AmeriCorps VISTAs

Wyman has been approved to bring on AmeriCorps VISTA members to support our capacity building for growing Wyman's Teen Outreach Program both locally and nationally. VISTA (Volunteer In Service To America) is a federal program that allows dedicated individuals to work for a below poverty wage while supporting organizations that help to end the poverty cycle. All VISTAs begin their service with a Pre-Service Orientation and once sworn in, begin a one year role.

Bamidele Otemuyiwa, who goes by "Dele" for short, is the Programs/Operations Specialist VISTA for Wyman's Teen Outreach Program. He is originally from Nigeria/England, but came to the United States to attend Princeton University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Geosciences. After graduation, he moved to Saint Louis to complete graduate work in Earth and Planetary Sciences from Washington University. While in Saint Louis, he developed a passion for working in the non-profit field through volunteering as a member of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team and Club Red (the Red Cross young professional group), and interning with the Red Cross financial development team. Additionally, he volunteers at the Saint Louis International Institute as a Citizenship Literacy Tutor. In the future, he hopes to pursue a career in non-profit management while obtaining his masters in non-profit administration. Outside of professional interests, he travels widely, reads, plays Scrabble, and enjoys living in University City with his wife and their cat.

Julie Bernstein, a St. Louis native, is a 2005 graduate of Clayton High School. She continued her education in New York City where she received her BBA in Fashion Merchandising from LIM College. Although her background is in fashion, she is making a career change to the non-profit sector and plans on returning to school to earn her Masters in Social Work. Julie recently moved back to St. Louis after spending the first half of this year in Israel working with patients with mental disabilities. Her volunteer experience includes animal care and conservation, tutoring, work with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and the National Council of Jewish Women. In her free time, Julie loves to travel, is an avid reader and enjoys art projects, biking, and spending time outdoors. Julie is thrilled to be a VISTA, and looks forward to working with the dedicated staff at Wyman.
